Thoughts on art and science
Art
and science—usually the two aren’t even connected by an “and” but by a “versus”
yet they are so meant to go together. It took a long time for me to admit that
I loved art, even longer to realize that all I wanted was to be an artist.
Science, however, I never hesitated with in the same way. Then, my first
semester of freshman year in college, I took Astronomy. At the same time, I
took my first college-level studio course. And I realized how similar the
conversations were in physics and sculpture, in theories of science and
visualization. Art and science are meant to go together, are maybe even impossible
to separate. There is an art to science and a science to art. What is so
exciting about this class is that it encourages collaboration between art and
science in a way that recognizes their symbiotic and inextricable relationship.
Scientists need artists to visualize intangibles, like scientists at NASA
describing non-visual phenomena, to digest and synthesize information. And that relationship goes both ways.
Here’s
some TEDtalks that I like about art and science and philosophy and spirituality
really.
